The Raggedy Edge, Chapter 5: Set a Course for Adventure

The crew of the Lightspeed Vagabond is once again called upon by the Galactic Troubleshooting Network. They are tasked with retrieving Dr. Ilyria Burkil, an Imperial scientist, who wishes to defect to the Rebellion. Burkil is currently working on a highly secret and secure project. She is scheduled to vacation on the luxury spaceliner the Corellian Princess. The crew is to make their way aboard the Princess and help Burkil defect before the cruise is completed. Nzuri, Verrack, The One, Eri’anya, and Osimiri made arrangements to board the cruise, with Jaindo following the route in the Vagabond.

To get aboard the ship, which has strict policies regarding weapons, Verrack poses as a member of the ship’s maintenance crew. As the rest of the team boards the ship, Verrack manually causes the weapons scanners to provide false responses that the team members carry no weapons (at the cost of much charring to his fingers). While on board, Verrack also got very deep into his cover, answering actual maintenance calls…and having a few encounters with dianogas (sparking a running gag for the character).

The rest of the team, fanned out to find Dr. Burkil, and take stock of her security team. Nzuri encountered a shady looking Zabrak who seemed to take quite an interest in her. They also encountered Vespa Melantha of the Tapani House Melantha, on vacation from her reality holo-series, accompanied by her protocol droid assistant. Vespa took a liking to the group and wanted to spend time with them, making it more difficult for them to contact Burkil and plan an efficient extraction. Upon making initial contact with Burkil, she briefly betrayed a flash of recognition upon seeing Osimiri, but quickly regained her composure.

Reviewing Burkil’s itinerary, the team planned to make their getaway during her visit to the zoological gardens on . At the gardens, they created a distraction by opening the gates to multiple animal habitats, with Osimiri psychically urging the animals to escape and run rampant through the facility. The team and Burkil “took refuge” in a refresher, with Vespa and her droid following them, and the mysterious Zabrak finding his way there, as well. Burkil’s security detail was incapacitated, and it appeared that the team would get away without difficulty…until the Zabrak presented himself as a threat. He took Vespa’s Tapani lightfoil that was hidden in her protocol droid and stabbed Burkil through the chest before being gunned down by the team.

As she lay dying, Burkil said to Osimiri, “I’m…sorry. Weren’t supposed to…hurt…so sorry…” then, to the entire group, “Shadowsaber can’t procee….” before dying. The team quickly made their way to the rendezvous with the Vagabond, unsure of what to make of this new information.
